Lighter than mulmul, and crisper.
What it’s made of
Cotton Voile is a 100% cotton fabric in a plain weave, made from fine, tightly twisted yarn. It has a slightly higher thread count than mulmul, which gives it a crisper hand and more defined structure. The word voile is French for veil, which describes the light, semi-sheer look.
How voile differs from mulmul
Both are very light cotton. Mulmul is soft and clingy. Voile is crisper and holds its shape, so the pleats are cleaner and the fabric does not cling. If you want the lightness of mulmul with a little more definition, voile is the one.
What it feels like
Cool and paper-like, smooth against the skin. It feels light but slightly more structured, as if the fabric knows what it is doing.
How it wears
Because voile has some structure, it produces cleaner pleats than mulmul. It drapes well and holds its shape through a long day without adjustment. It is slightly sheer, so wear a matching petticoat.
A note on weight
50–70 GSM. The same lightweight range as mulmul, with more definition from the tighter weave.
How to wash it
- Wash: Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle. Wash a new saree separately for the first two or three washes, in case a colour bleeds.
- Dry: Hang in the shade. It dries quickly.
- Iron: Medium heat while slightly damp. The crispness comes back easily.
