Wood-pulp fibre with a silk-like drape. Fluid, affordable, and honest about what it is.
What it’s made of
Viscose, also called rayon, is a regenerated cellulose fibre made from wood pulp. It is semi-natural: the raw material is plant-based and the process uses chemical solvents. It was historically sold as artificial silk, and its drape justifies the comparison. It is not silk.
How it differs from silk
Silk is a natural protein fibre from silkworms. Viscose is a plant-cellulose fibre made in a factory. Viscose gives a similar fluid look at a far more accessible price, but it does not behave like silk. It is weaker when wet and needs a gentler hand.
What it feels like
Fluid, with a slight silky sheen. It drapes well and is cool against the skin.
How it wears
Viscose drapes with fluidity and movement. Pleats are soft rather than structured. It suits occasions where the look of silk is wanted without the price or the upkeep.
How to wash it
- Wash: Gentle hand wash in cold water, or a delicate machine cycle at 30°C.
- Dry: Lay flat. Viscose can stretch when wet and heavy, and hanging can pull the shape out.
- Iron: Low heat on the reverse side while slightly damp.
