Smooth white fabric draped in soft folds

Modal

Beech wood turned to fabric. Soft, fluid, and effortless.

What it’s made of

Modal is a regenerated cellulose fibre made from beech wood pulp. It is semi-natural: the raw material is natural, the process is industrial. The fabric is known for being soft, softer than cotton and more fluid than linen.

Modal, viscose and Tencel

All three are made from wood pulp. Modal is made from beech and is a stronger, more durable relation of viscose, with a smoother, softer feel. Tencel is a brand owned by Lenzing that covers both Lyocell and Modal. If you see Tencel Modal, that is branded Modal.

What it feels like

Modal is like a favourite worn-in garment that happens to drape beautifully. It is smooth against the skin, fluid in movement and has a slight weight that makes it fall with natural grace. It does not feel crisp or structured. It flows.

How it wears

Modal drapes very well and is excellent for long hours of wear. It does not hold a sharp structured pleat the way linen or Chanderi does, but the drape is natural and graceful. It wrinkles less than cotton and recovers well from packing.

How to wash it

  • Wash: Machine wash gentle at 30°C.
  • Dry: Hang in the shade. It dries quickly.
  • Iron: Low setting while slightly damp.
