Spun silk, naturally textured, and unlike polished silk.
What it’s made of
Matka silk is made from spun silk yarn: the shorter fibres left over from the reeling process, twisted and spun rather than drawn as continuous filaments. That produces a thicker, more uneven yarn, and a silk with visible slub texture that looks handmade.
What it feels like
Matka has a rough, honest texture. It does not feel the way most people expect silk to feel. It is not smooth or slippery. It feels almost cotton-like in texture, with the weight and lustre of silk.
How matka differs from other silks
Silk crepe and georgette are made from fine continuous filaments and feel smooth. Matka is made from spun short fibres, so it is nubbly and matte. If you like silk but find it too shiny, matka is the answer.
How it wears
Matka drapes with weight and substance. It holds its form well and suits structured occasions. It does not flow or billow. It falls.
How to wash it
- Wash: Hand wash recommended, in cold water with a mild detergent. Handle it gently. Test a hidden corner first: dab it with a damp white cloth, and if colour comes off, use a trusted dry cleaner.
- Dry: Lay flat on a towel. Reshape while damp. Do not wring.
- Iron: Reverse side, on the silk setting.
