The traditional base of Banarasi sarees, made easier to wear.
What it’s made of
Katan Silk is 100% mulberry silk, woven from katan: a yarn made by twisting several fine silk filaments together. The twist gives it strength and a firm, smooth feel. Katan is the traditional base fabric for Banarasi sarees from Varanasi. The katan sarees we carry are powerloom-woven, which keeps them accessible.
Katan and Banarasi
Banarasi describes the weaving tradition of Varanasi, known for zari brocade. Katan describes the silk yarn and plain-woven base used in many Banarasi sarees. So a Katan saree is one kind of Banarasi saree.
What it feels like
Smooth-faced, with a natural glossy finish and a medium-light weight.
How it wears
Katan drapes with body and holds its shape. The firm hand makes pleats sit neatly, which suits wedding and festive wear.
How to wash it
- Wash: Hand wash recommended, in cold water with a mild detergent. If the saree has heavy zari, or colour comes off on a damp white cloth when you test a hidden corner, use a trusted dry cleaner who knows silk.
- Dry: Lay flat on a clean towel and reshape while damp.
- Iron: Reverse side, on the silk setting.
