The summer fabric with a square check.
What it’s made of
Kota Doria comes from Kota in Rajasthan, and most of the weaving is around Kaithoon village. It is made from cotton and silk yarn, and sometimes with zari for the design. The ratio of cotton to silk varies between weavers, and pure cotton versions also exist. Its mark is the khat: a fine square check that is woven into the cloth, not printed.
A short history
In earlier days, Doria cloth was woven in Kota in narrow widths for turbans. Weavers brought from Mysore introduced the fine, light weave, which is why Kota Doria was also known as Kota Masuria. Over time the turban cloth became a saree, and the name was protected with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
What the khat is
The khat is created by weaving cotton and silk yarn at different densities in both the warp and the weft. The result is a grid of tiny open squares that you can see when you hold the cloth to the light. The finer the check, the more khats across the width.
What it feels like
Crisper than voile, more breathable than linen. It is light and slightly rough in a good way, with a soft sheen where silk is used. The square check gives visual texture even in plain colours.
How it wears
Kota drapes with a light structure. It holds pleats cleanly and stays comfortable in hot weather. It is one of the best summer sarees for anyone who wants structure without weight.
How to tell real Kota Doria
- Hold it to the light. The khat squares should be visible and part of the weave.
- Look for small irregularities. Handwoven checks are slightly uneven, because the weaver sets the tension by hand.
- Feel the weight. Real Kota Doria is very light for a saree.
- Ask how it was woven. Kota Doria is also made on powerlooms, and sarees may be printed or embroidered on top of the base cloth. Ask us on WhatsApp 9187109424 about any saree you are considering.
How to wash it
- Wash: Hand wash for the cotton-silk blend. Machine wash gentle for the pure cotton version. Wash a new saree on its own the first couple of times.
- Dry: Hang in the shade. Kota dries quickly.
- Iron: Medium heat while slightly damp.
A note on weight
70–90 GSM. Very light for a structured fabric.
Where it comes from
Kota, Rajasthan, GI-tagged.
Best for
- Tyohar: festive and religious occasions
- Aarambh: the cotton version is excellent for first-time wearers
- Summer months: light and breathable despite its structure
