If you have never draped a saree before, you are in the right place. This guide covers the Nivi drape — the most common method in India. You will get it in a few tries. First time: about 20 minutes. By the tenth: five.

Before you start

  • You need a saree blouse stitched to your measurements, and a petticoat in a matching or complementary colour.
  • Petticoat must sit firmly at your natural waist — not your hips. It anchors the saree.
  • Have 3–4 safety pins ready.
  • Stand near a mirror.

Step 1 — Tuck the start end

Take the plain end of the saree and tuck it into your petticoat at your navel, going from right to left. Tuck about an inch deep. The fabric should reach just above the floor.

Step 2 — Wrap once around

Take the saree and wrap it around your body once — from right to left, around your back and back to the front. Keep the bottom edge at a consistent height: about an inch above the floor.

Step 3 — Make the pleats

Gather the fabric and make 5–7 pleats, each about 5cm wide. All pleats face left. Hold them together, tuck the bunch into your petticoat at the centre front (slightly left of centre), and pin through the pleats into the petticoat.

Step 4 — Bring the pallu over the shoulder

Take the remaining fabric — the decorated pallu end — and bring it around your back from right to left, then drape it over your left shoulder. The pallu should hang behind you at an even length, typically ending around the knee.

Step 5 — Secure and adjust

Pin the pallu to your blouse at the left shoulder with a safety pin. Step back and look. Adjust the pleats and the drape until you are satisfied.

Tips that actually help

  • Start with lighter fabrics — Mulmul, Cotton Voile, Modal, Tencel are much easier than silk or linen for a first drape.
  • Slightly damp hands grip fabric better when making pleats.
  • The pleats do not need to be perfect. Natural draping with slight variation is part of the look.
