If you have never owned a saree before — or you have one from a relative that has never left the cupboard — this page is for you. What to buy, what you need alongside it, how to drape it, and what to expect.
Start with the right fabric
The single most important decision for a first saree is fabric. You want something light, forgiving, and easy to drape.
- Mulmul or Cotton Voile — the lightest options. They drape themselves.
- Modal — slightly more substantial than mulmul, equally easy to drape.
- Tencel — a good choice if you want something that looks polished for a workplace occasion.
- Kota Doria (cotton variant) — slightly crisp, holds pleats well.
Avoid for your first saree: pure silk, anything with heavy embroidery, anything described as structured or stiff.
What you’ll also need
- A blouse: Most sarees come with a blouse piece. TARINÉ product pages tell you whether a blouse piece is Attached (included) or Separate (not included). Budget ₹300–500 for stitching.
- A petticoat: Cotton, sitting at your natural waist, in a colour that complements your saree.
- Safety pins: 3–4 is enough.
How long does draping take?
First time: 20–30 minutes. By the fifth time: 10 minutes. By the tenth: five. Watch our draping video before your first attempt. → Draping Guide
What to expect the first few times
You will feel like the saree is going to fall off. It almost certainly will not — that is what the pins are for. Take shorter steps than usual until you forget you are wearing it, which usually takes about twenty minutes.
